Burned Out and Still Leading? Here’s How to Rest and Rebuild

What if the breakthrough you need isn’t found in pushing harder… but in stopping completely?

It’s not easy for a leader to pause. But recently, I was forced to. Not by a packed calendar or a big decision - but by a steel beam.

One unexpected moment.

One hard hit.

One concussion later… and I had no choice but to stop everything.

Not the kind of interruption you pencil into your planner. I’m talking about the kind that slams into your routine, your health, your momentum - and forces you to stop.

Literally.

My interruption?

Steel.

I hit my head on a steel beam (Yep, really. Graceful, I know). Steel won. What followed was a full-blown concussion - with all the fun side effects: headaches, nausea, blurred vision, fatigue, and a long, unwelcome pause from productivity.

No bandages. No visible bruises.Just a swirling storm of internal chaos… and a whole lot of silence.

But here’s what I want you to hear: Sometimes the interruption is the invitation. And sometimes, silence… heals.

The Prescription? R.E.S.T.

Not the ‘lay on the couch while you answer emails on your phone’ kind of rest. I mean deep, soul-restoring, completely unplugged stillness.

No screens.. No calls. No books. No doing.

Just… being.

This was the message my heart needed to write.

And maybe… it’s the one your heart ❤️ needed to read.

It was uncomfortable. It felt unproductive. And if I’m honest… it scared me. Because I had to face a truth I’d been outrunning with busy days and long to-do lists.

I don’t know how to stop… until I had no choice.

So, here’s what REST taught me… and maybe, just maybe, it’s what you need too.

💡The 4 Lessons Hidden in R.E.S.T.

  1. Relinquish Control… I couldn’t push through it. I couldn’t hustle my way to healing. I had to surrender - and it felt like failure. Until I realized… surrender isn’t quitting. It’s trusting. It’s laying down what you were never meant to carry alone.

  2. Engage in Prayer… Without the noise, I could finally hear God clearly. I wasn’t praying to fix something - I was simply being present. And in that space, I heard what I needed most: ‘You’re not alone.’ ‘You don’t have to do it all.’ and most importantly… ‘I’ve got you.’

  3. Shift Your Focus… When your world literally goes dark, your priorities light up. The stuff I thought mattered? Gone. What remained? Faith. Family. Peace. and Purpose. Sometimes it takes a shutdown to re-center your soul.

  4. Trust the Process… Healing is slow. It’s not glamorous. It’s not Instant. But it’s necessary. And God often does His best work… in the stillness.
